2015 Rugby World Cup digital experience

Infront X, a subsidiary of Infront, was chosen to design and deliver the official mobile app for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, giving rugby fans worldwide the most compelling, interactive and informative mobile experiences to date.

Immersing fans in the buzz of the experience

The app was developed as part of the digital experience leading up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Available for smartphones and tablets internationally, it was designed to enable the millions of rugby fans around the world to immerse themselves in the Rugby World Cup experience. The app was released in three phases with the final version rolled out in advance of the tournament commencement.

Empowering fans to engage

The first phase offered World Rugby news, specific team information, tournament dates, venues, ticket information and matches and pools as well as numerous social media features that empowered fans to engage with each other and the teams. In Spring 2015, multi-lingual versions were released in Spanish, French and Japanese, along with World Cup trophy tour details. The final version, launched in September 2015, included full features that further enhanced the in-stadia experience including live match audio streaming, live and post-match statistics, expert analysis, scores, video highlights and a social media hub.The 2015 Rugby World Cup was hailed as the biggest and best Rugby World Cup to date. Throughout the tournament, the dedicated hashtag #RWC2015 was used twice a second on average and over five million times in total. There were more than 270 million video views across all social media channels and the official App was downloaded 3 million times across 204 nations.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The app won the Best Digital Media Project award at the inaugural TV Sports Awards in Monaco (October 2015) and a Sports Technology Award for Best Tournament Mobile App (April 2016).
